NIJ's Graduate Research Fellowship Program is an annual program that provides assistance to universities for dissertation research support to outstanding doctoral students undertaking independent research on issues related to crime and justice. Students from any academic discipline may propose original research that has direct implications for criminal justice in the United States. NIJ encourages a variety of approaches and perspectives in its research programs. NIJ awards these fellowships in an effort to encourage promising doctoral students in the application of critical and innovative thinking to pressing criminal justice problems.

Forensic DNA Research and Development (pdf)

NIJ is seeking applications for research and development that can enhance the forensic uses of DNA technology. This solicitation focuses on technologies that result in faster, more robust, more informative, less costly, or less labor-intensive identification, collection, preservation, and/or analysis of DNA evidence collected from crime scenes.
Research and Development in the Forensic Analysis of Trace Evidence (pdf)

NIJ seeks applications for research and development in trace evidence investigation for criminal justice purposes. This solicitation is aimed at improving the ability to locate and identify trace evidence from crime scenes and to enhance the ability of crime laboratories to analyze trace evidence.
Research and Development on Impression Evidence (pdf)

NIJ seeks applications for research and development to enhance crime laboratories' ability to identify, characterize, capture, visualize, and preserve impression evidence. This solicitation focuses, among other things, on tools and technologies that will allow faster, more widely applicable, more rugged, less costly, or less labor-intensive identification, collection, preservation, and analysis of impression evidence at the crime scene or crime laboratory.
Data Resources Program 2009: Funding for the Analysis of Existing Data (pdf)

NIJ is requesting proposals to replicate previous findings and conduct original research extending data from the National Archive of Criminal Justice Data (NACJD). NACJD houses quantitative and qualitative data from NIJ-funded research and provides online access to downloadable, machine-readable (SPSS, SAS, or ASCII) files as well as data dictionaries, study abstracts and, in limited cases, MapInfo or ESRI geographic data. The archive is maintained by the Inter-University Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR) at the University of Michigan and is supported by NIJ. NIJ is particularly interested in NACJD data, but will consider data from other sources. All data files resulting from Data Resources Program (DRP) grants must be added to NACJD, regardless of their source.

W.E.B. Du Bois Fellowship Program 2009 (pdf)

The W.E.B. Du Bois Fellowship Program seeks to advance knowledge regarding the confluence of crime, justice, and culture in various societal contexts. The Fellowship places particular emphasis on crime, violence, and the administration of justice in diverse cultural contexts within the United States.
National Study of Collateral Consequences for Criminal Convictions (pdf)

Consonant with Section 510 of the Court Security Improvement Act of 2007 (Public Law 110-177), NIJ is soliciting proposals for a national study that will provide a comprehensive compilation of Federal and State collateral consequences for criminal convictions. The purpose of this research is to inform and improve criminal justice policy and practice by providing policymakers with the information they need to understand the legal and regulatory barriers that may affect successful offender reentry into the community.

Evaluation of a Demonstration Program: Drug Testing, Certain and Swift Sanctions, and Treatment Referral for Chronic Drug Users Under Community Supervision (pdf)

NIJ is seeking proposals for research to evaluate the effectiveness of a demonstration program that includes a drug-testing, sanctions, and treatment protocol for chronic drug users under criminal justice supervision in the community. The basic principles of the program must include: (1) frequent drug testing; (2) certain, swift, and graduated sanctions for failed tests; and (3) access to residential treatment, as appropriate. The purpose of this research is to inform and improve criminal justice and public health policy and practice, and to reduce recidivism among chronic drug offenders on pretrial status, probation, or parole.
