October 03-Masako Shinozaki, Investigator, National Police Agency, Tokyo, Japan
Masako Shinozaki, an Investigator with the National Police Agency in Tokyo, Japan, met with NIJ Social Science Analyst Karen Bachar to discuss violence against children and youth. The discussion included relevant research and statistics on the AMBER Alert program, Project Safe Childhood, and youth violence prevention and national sex offender registries in the United States and abroad.

Toshikazu Shimizu, Superintendent of the National Police Agency in Japan, met with NIJ Staff to discuss research and statistics on DNA issues in the US and abroad. Discussion centered on the President's DNA Initiative and NIJ work on the DNA backlog. Winnie Reed, Crime Control and Prevention Research Division Chief; John Paul Jones, Acting Deputy Chief of the Investigative and Forensic Sciences Division; Katharine Browning, Senior Social Science Analyst in the Crime Control and Prevention Research Division; Mark Nelson, Program Manager in the Investigative and Forensic Sciences Division; Mike Sheppo, Visiting Scientist and Senior Program Management Specialist (contractor); and David McClure, NIJ Graduate Research Assistant, participated in the discussion.
September 21-October 03-20th Annual Australian and New Zealand Society of Criminology (ANZSOC) Conference, Adelaide, Australia
Dr. Cindy Smith, Chief of the International Center, served as plenary speaker at the 20th annual ANZSOC criminology conference in Adelaide, Australia. Dr. Smith's presentation entitled “Informing Policy by Evidence-Based Research” provided a theoretical model for policymaking and examined the potential intervention points where research can have an impact.
The conference kicked off a series of visits for Dr. Smith throughout Australia. She also met with the Australian Institute of Criminology in Canberra and conducted a site visit to Griffith University in Brisbane for a multiuniversity presentation on research methods. While in Australia, Dr. Smith also met with the National Institute of Forensic Science in Melbourne in support of a recently signed Memorandum of Understanding between the National Institute of Justice and the National Institute of Forensic Science.

Six key officials from Jamaica, St. Kitts & Nevis, and Trinidad & Tobago met with Dr. Cindy Smith, Chief of the International Center, and Social Science Analysts Jennifer Hanley and Karen Bachar to discuss relevant research and statistics on trafficking in persons in the United States and abroad. In attendance were Nesta Hermine Haye, Ministry of Justice Jamaica; Taitu Ababa Heron, Planning Institute of Jamaica; Nigel Oliver Parke, Ministry of Justice, Jamaica; Annette Sharon Richards, Ministry of Justice, Jamaica; Peter Kayode Sutton, St. Kitts & Nevis Defense Force; Darryl Giles Jodha, Police Detective, Trinidad & Tobago Police Services.
September 17-Associate Professor Michael Levy, Director of Corrections Health, Australian Capital Territory Government
Michael Levy, Director of Corrections Health of the Australian Capital Territory Government, visited NIJ to discuss prisoner health issues. He met with Dr. Cindy Smith, Chief of the International Center, to learn about relevant research and statistics on prisoner health issues in the United States and abroad.

NIJ hosted a delegation of four key officials from Kazakhstan who specialize in combating trafficking in persons.The delegation included Elvira Abilkhasimovna Azimova, Director, International Law and Protection of State Property Rights, Ministry of Justice, Kazakhstan; Bolat Sharmetovich Kadyrov, Director, Anti-Trafficking in Persons Training Center, Karaganda Legal Institute; Timur Umirzakovich Karimov, Director, Trafficking in Persons Prevention Department, Ministry of Internal Affairs; and Grigoriy Semyenovich Prichshepa, Director, National Crime Statistics Center, General Prosecution Department. Dr. Cindy Smith, Chief of the International Center, met with the delegation to discuss relevant research and statistics on trafficking in persons in the United States and abroad.
August 14-Greece
Natalia Papasteriadou met with NIJ staff to talk about best-practices and international information sharing about research on transnational crime. Ms. Papasteriadou is a lawyer from Greece who works as an academic researcher at the Centre of International and European Economic Law. She advises the Greek government on a range of international legal and judicial issues and also designs judicial capacity-building and cross-border crime programs for the Balkans.

Substance abuse and drug court professional Jaroslav Šejvl from the Czech Republic met with NIJ staff to discuss research and information on programs that may be adaptable for use in the Czech Republic.

Sheriff (Judge) Lindsay Wood of the Glasgow and Strathkelvin Sheriff’s Court in Scotland met with OJP staff for discussions on drug courts. Sheriff Wood described his innovative and effective program and heard information about OJP drug court programs from NIJ’s Linda Truitt, BJA’s Eunice Pierre, and OJJDP’s Gwen Williams.
March 9-Japanese Visitors
Professor Takashi Yamazaki's graduate level geography class from Osaka University in Japan visited with staff from NIJ's Crime Control and Prevention Research Division. Ron Wilson, program manager for MAPS, and Brett Chapman, Social Science Analyst, met with the group to discuss crime mapping and community policing.
February 6-Visitors from Kazakhstan
The Criminal Division's Office of Overseas Prosecutorial Development, Assistance and Training (OPDAT) hosted a delegation from Kazakhstan. The delegation, from the Legal Statistics and Special Records Committee at the General Prosecutor's Office, included Adil Zhunuspekovich Turanov, Chief of the Analytic and Legal Regulation Division, Tolegen Abusagitovich Mukatayev, Senior Justice Adviser (Major-General) and Chief of the Personal Activity Unit in the Organization - Personal Activity Division, and Vladimir Vitalyevich Fedotov, Chief of the Legal Statistics and Special Records Committee. International Center Chief Cindy Smith and International Networking Liaison Michael Hronick briefed them on the activities of the International Center and discussed issues of terrorism, human trafficking, and corruption.

Cindy Smith, Chief of the International Center, and Leora Rosen, Senior Social Science Analyst with the Violence and Victimization Research Division at NIJ met with a delegation of four judges from Spain. The discussion centered on child abduction and domestic violence.
January 30-31-South Australia Attorney General and Minister of Justice
A delegation from the Attorney-General's Department of South Australia met with OJP senior leadership to discuss a variety of issues ranging from crime prevention and DNA to juvenile justice. Members of the delegation were Michael Atkinson, M.P. Attorney-General and Minister of Justice; Peter Louca, Chief of Staff; and Jerome Maguire, Chief Executive. During the visit they met with Assistant Attorney General Regina Schofield, Deputy Assistant Attorney General for Policy Coordination and Principal Deputy Director of NIJ David Hagy, Administrator for OJJDP J. Robert Flores, NIJ Deputy Director for Research and Evaluation Thomas Feucht, NIJ Deputy Director for Science and Technology John Morgan, and International Center Chief Cindy Smith.

Carolin Vogelei, a psychologist with the Society for Scientific Judicial Law Psychology (GWG) of Mediation and Law and Dr. Christina Wicke, a legal advisor to the Central Authority of the Federal Prosecutor in Germany met with Leora Rosen, Senior Social Science Analyst with the Violence and Victimization Research Division at NIJ. The topics of the meeting were child abduction and domestic violence, with a focus on military families.
